What is an IP Address?

An IP address (short for Internet Protocol address) is a series of numbers which identifies a computer connected to the Internet. It works similar to a house address — when you go to a website in your browser, the website “delivers” the information to your IP address, the same way a letter is delivered to your house address.

Often times an IP address is tied to a physical location such as a house, office, or building. Therefore everyone in the location will share the same external IP address. The building will then use private internal IP addresses to differentiate between devices (for example on WiFi).
